Case study 07 · Atawhai
A calm, clear home for research that matters.
Atawhai is a research programme, funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand, working to make it safe to talk about family violence in health care. We rebuilt the entire website, so the research, the network and the voices of whānau sit together in one place that is easy to move through.

01 · The brief
A hard subject deserves a gentle site.
People come to Atawhai for different reasons: whānau, health care providers, researchers and partners. Some arrive carrying something heavy. The site needed to welcome all of them, lead each to what they came for, and never feel clinical or loud.
- Lead with the moemoā, the vision, in plain words.
- Give whānau, the network and the research each their own way in.
- Let people speak for themselves, in video.
- Keep the publications easy to find and cite.
02 · The site
Scroll the real thing.
The live home page, top to bottom. The vision comes first, then three doors: the Atawhai Network, Whānau Voice and the Publications. Then the people, in their own words and on film, and the partners who stand with the work.

03 · What we built
Every visitor, a clear way in.
A menu by who you are
What Matters to Whānau, Atawhai Whakapapa, Research Publications, the Atawhai Network and Pānui: each audience has its own place.
Voices on film
Researchers, clinicians and whānau speak in their own words, in short films set through the site.
Calm by design
Sunrise over the harbour, soft cream panels and generous space, so a heavy subject never feels hard to approach.
The people behind it
The partners and collaborators, and the Health Research Council funding, shown plainly on every visit to the home page.
